    Toubkal Trekking

    Explore the High Atlas Mountains

    Day 1      Arrive in Marrakech

Upon arrival at the airport in Marrakech, you will be welcomed and transferred to the hotel for your overnight stay.

    Meals: None
    Lodging: Riad Assia (or similar)

    Visit Marrakech's lively medina
Day 2      Marrakech / Trekking Imlil to Tacheddirt

We leave Marrakech after breakfast and drive to Imlil (elevation 5,700') via Asni.  Imlil is the principal trailhead for walkers and the place where we meet our mule team.  Once all our gear is loaded, we begin walking along the valley toward Tacheddirt, some five miles from Imlil.  Soon the trail begins to rise as we climb to the pass at Tizi 'n Tamatert (7,500'), then descend to the pretty village of Ouanestra (7,200'), from which we head onward another half hour or so to Tacheddirt (7,600'), where we set up camp near the river.  Today's total is four hours of walking.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Lodging: Camping

Load up the mules with gear and set off on your trek
Day 3      Trekking Tacheddirt to Azib Likemt

After breakfast in camp, we begin a long, slow ascent to the pass at Tizi Likemt (11,700') where, at the top, we enjoy our first fine view of the Toubkal Massif before beginning a long downhil descent to the village of Azib Likemt (7,200'), where we'll set up camp for the night.  Totay's total is five hours of walking.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Lodging: Camping

Leave Tacheddirt for the next camp
Day 4      Trekking Azib Likemt to Amsouzart

This day is long, but rather easy as our route passes through many interesting landscapes.  From Tizi 'n Ououraine (10,200'), enjoy further views of the Toubkal Massif, including the summit, the east face and the Ifni Dome (12,700').  The trail leads on toward Amsouzert (5,600'), one of the most striking villages in the region, where we spend the night in a local gite (farmhouse cottage).  Totay's total is six hours of walking.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Lodging: Gite Amsouzarte Berber House Lodge (or similar)

Enjoy panoramic views of the Toubkal Massif from the trail
Day 5      Trekking Amsouzrt to Ifni Lake

West of Amsouzert are several charming small villages which we explore as we make our way toward Ifni Lake (7,500'), the only lake in the Toubkal Massif.  It's a memorable sight, surrounded by rocky mountains and giant rock piles, and it's unusually deep as well.  We expect to arrive by lunchtime, then spend the afternoon relaxing by the shore and the night camping nearby.  Today's total is four hours of walking.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Lodging: Camping

Trek through the pass to Ifni Lake
Day 6      Trekking Ifni Lake to Toubkal Base Camp

By now, everyone should be acclimatized and ready to tackle the most challenging part of the trek, making our way along a steep path leading up a seemingly endless scree slope.  After a fashion, we reach the pass at Tizi n' Ouanoums (12,000'), a narrow ledge between two huge shafts of rock.  From here, it's a long switchback descent to Nelther Refuge (10,500'), where we set up camp for the night.  Today's total is six hours of walking.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Lodging: Camping

Head up from Ifni Lke to higher elevations
Day 7      Base Camp Trek to Summit and Back

We leave before dawn, following a well-worn route to the summit of Toubkal (13,700').  If conditions are good, the climb to the summit should take more than 2-3 hours, where we'll enjoy beautiful views of the entire Atlas range and the Marrakech plains beyond.  Returning to base camp, we then descend fairly rapidly to the villages of Sidi Chamharouch and Aremd, before walking to the Mizane River along a well-forested trail to the trailhead at Imlil, where we'll overnight in a guesthouse.  Today's total is nine hours of walking -- you'll sleep well tonight!

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Lodging: Iminouassif Guest (or similar)

After summiting, enjoy a well-deserved night's sleep at Iminouassif Guesthouse
    Day 8      Return to Marrakech

After breakfast, enjoy the ride back to Marrakech, where you will check in at your riad (comfortable manor house), your base for the next three nights.  The day is yours free to relax, visit the souqs, and check out the many famous monuments of the city.

    Meals: Breakfast
    Lodging: Riad Assia (or similar)

Say goodbye to the mountains and their villages, then head back to Marrakech
    Day 9 - 10      Marrakech

Spend the next two days in atmospheric Marrakech, one with guided activities and the other free to explore on your own.  Your guide will take you to Djemma el-Fna Square, colorful souqs around town, and historic monuments such as El Badi Palace, El Bahia Palace, Saadiens Tomb, and more.  On your own, decide whether to search out new sights or perhaps return to a favorite or two for in-depth explorations on your last two nights in this amazing country.

    Meals: Breakfast
    Lodging: Riad Assia (or similar)

Experience Djemma el-fna Square in Marrakech
    Day 11      Marrakech / Onward

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home to the U.S. or perhaps onward to another exotic adventure of your choosing.  Allow us to set up a relaxing day or two in the coastal town of Essaouira if you haven't yet had your fill of this wondrous land.

    Meals: Breakfast

Bid farewell to this lovely and mysterious land
