    Highlights of Patagonia

A week-long immersion in the stunning scenery of southern Patagonia

    Day 1      Buenos Aires

Upon landing in Buenos Aires our city host will meet you and bring you to your hotel in the Palermo Soho neighborhood.  Your host will be your local contact while you are in Buenos Aires and can answer questions, offer tips about places to see and restaurants to try, and also arrange additional activities as you desire.

You will have the rest of the day at leisure to enjoy this vibrant city, so you can explore the historic neighborhoods, enjoy the café culture of Buenos Aires, and recover from your overnight flight.

    Meals: None
Lodging: Aspen Square Palermo or similar

Day 2      Buenos Aires City Tour & Tango Show

In the morning, your host will pick you up from your hotel to enjoy a half-day city tour that hits all the spots of significance in Buenos Aires. Visit the historical and political center of the city, charming San Telmo with its cobblestone streets, and colorful La Boca where tango is ever-present. Also stroll through the chic and aristocratic Recoleta neighborhood, where the regal homes are reminiscent of the city's glory days. Your guide won't let you miss the highlights, but will be flexible to adjust plans based on your curiosity and interests.

In the evening you will be picked up from your hotel for a night out at one of Buenos Aires’ most emblematic cultural highlights -- a tango show offering a spectacular demonstration of the finest local dancing. The dinner theater also includes your choice of Argentine cuisine and all the malbec you’d like. At the end of the evening you will be driven back to your hotel.

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Lodging: Aspen Square Palermo or similar

Day 3      Flight to El Calafate

Transfer to the domestic airport this morning for your flight south to El Calafate, the gateway to Patagonia. On landing you will immediately notice the difference in climate and landscape. The town sits on the dry, dramatic Patagonian steppe, on the shore of Lago Argentina, Argentina's biggest lake. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel. You will have the evening to explore this frontier-like town with many shops and restaurants. It stays light late in the southern summer, so you may also have time to make the 1 km hike out to Laguna Nimez to catch the beautiful Patagonian sunset.

    Meals: Breakfast
Lodging: Hotel Kau Yatun or similar

    Day 4      Perito Moreno Glacier

El Calafate sits at the edge of the Patagonian Continental Ice-cap, which stretches for 560 miles and contains the third largest glacier in the world (after Antarctica and Greenland). Set out on a full day excursion today to this stunning ice field: Perito Moreno Glacier. Revel in multiple perspectives on the glacier's face as you meander the well-positioned walkways that allow you the perfect vantage point to watch, and hear, giant chunks of ice plummet into the waters of Lago Argentino. Your guide will answer questions about the glacier and the park. Also included are a nautical safari to see the 300-foot walls of the north face up close and a mini-trek on the glacier itself.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Lodging: Hotel Kau Yatun or similar

    Day 5      El Calafate

Today is open for you to enjoy any of the optional tours around El Calafate. We suggest a visit to Estancia Cristina, a bike ride out to the lake, or a boat cruise to explore some of the more remote glaciers in the region. Talk to us about your interests and we can help you make plans in advance. Or, play it by ear, and let your spirit guide you on arrival.

    Meals: Breakfast
Lodging: Hotel Kau Yatun or similar

    Day 6      Flight to Ushuaia

Make the most of the morning in El Calafate, fitting in any last sites you want to explore.  At the appropriate time, you will be transferred to the Calafate airport in for your flight to Ushuaia. In the southern end of Argentina, on the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, lies Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Located on the Beagle Channel with  an impressive vista of sea, forests, lakes, and mountains, Ushuaia is a picturesque city that offers unexplored, untouched territories that invite visitors to discovery and adventure. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time to visit the Prisoners Museum this afternoon to learn about this outpost region's history (not included).

    Meals: Breakfast
Lodging: Hotel Los Yamanas or similar

    Day 7      Tierra del Fuego

Today you explore Tierra del Fuego National Park. The full day excursion around the park includes an easy trek and a canoeing expedition. A short drive from your hotel brings you to the park, where you start a 7-km trek of about 3 1/2 hours to a wonderful scenic point overlooking Lake Roca, Lagunas Verde and Negra, Rivers Ovando and Lapataia, and Bahía Lapataia. Hiking through this beech forest you will be able to look for the Magellanic woodpecker (the largest in South America), Austral parakeets, black-chested buzzard eagles, and Andean condors. You may also discover artifacts of the Yamanas, the ancient inhabitants of the area. Enjoy a fun outdoor lunch on Lake Roca. Spend the afternoon paddling in the National Park. You will be outfitted with equipment and embark on sturdy inflatable canoes with instructions from your experienced guide in Lago Roca. Paddle the Ovando River, which flows into the Green Lake, offering one of the most beautiful views of the Park. Upon landing in Lapataia Bay,on the Beagle Channel.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Lodging: Hotel Los Yamanas or similar

Day 8      Ushuaia / Beagle Channel / Buenos Aires / Onward

From the Ushuaia pier you will take a boat cruise along the famous Beagle Channel. Soak in panoramic vistas of Ushuaia Bay and see diverse marine wildlife, such as cormorants and fur seals, on De los Lobos and De los Pajaros Islands. On one of the Bridges Isles, you can explore the island for concheros, or giant shells, and enjoy views of both Chile and Argentina. You will also see the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse.

If your flight schedule allows, we highly recommend the Magellanic Penguin rookery tour (not included) on Martillo Island in the Beagle Channel where you will be able to walk with the penguins. This excursion is only available from October to April.

After your day on the water, head to the airport for your flight back to Buenos Aires and beyond. You may connect to your flight back to the US tonight, or choose to spend another day or two in Buenos Aires. If your calendar allows, consider extending your trip to see the magnificent Iguazu Falls. This network of waterfalls sits between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, and astounds visitors with its volume and beauty. Including this in your itinerary will add 3 nights, well worth it.
