Costa Rica Photo Workshop with Wayde Carroll

Personalised mentorship in a small group in an abundant environment

    Day 1      Costa Rica arrival

You'll be greeted on arrival in Costa Rica's international airport near the capital, San Jose, and transferred to a nearby hotel with expansive grounds and beautiful gardens. Enjoy the tropical setting with your photography leader Wayde Carroll. This evening, Wayde will give the first of his daily presentations. Bring your cameras to enable Wayde to familiarize himself with your equipment and your goals for the week.

    Lodging: Hotel Bouganvillea or similar

The Tropical beauty of Costa Rica
Day 2      Through the fertile center

Wake early to capture the first light in the gardens. After breakfast depart on a beautiful drive, through the deep-green coffee-covered slopes of Costa Rica's Meseta Central, past the forests of Braulio Carillo National Park, into the fertile Caribbean lowlands, ever alert to the photography opportunities.

Our hosts at La Quinta will be waiting to welcome us. "Su casa es nuestra casa." Their home is our home -- for 6 days and 5 nights. Settle into your casita. Learn your way around the property. Note the colors of the birds attracted to the feeding platforms. Enjoy the butterfly house where it's possible to be still and unobtrusive while you photograph from ground level and from on high.  Note the caiman pond, the river below, the herb and vegetable gardens, the swimming pool and open-air dining room. Food here is traditional and fresh, prepared with ingredients grown in La Quinta's gardens.

    Meals: Lunch, Dinner
    Lodging: La Quinta

Learn how to freeze focus on hummingbird wings that are beating more than 50X per second
Day 3-5      Sarapiqui from dawn to dark

Wake with the earliest avian visitors, wander with your camera, and enjoy typical Tico (Costa Rican) breakfasts.  Wayde and the staff of La Quinta will plan each day's outings to allow for maximal light conditions and photo skill building. The towering jungle canopy, the animal life above and below, the swinging suspension bridge at Tirimbina Nature Reserve, the rushing Sarapiqui River, the unpretentious market town of Puerto Viejo, and the pineapple plantation next door to La Quinta, are full of photo content.  ( If you would like to try an adventure activity such as zip-lining or rafting, there will be a space of time for that, too.) Back at the lodge, Wayde continues his presentations, and the photographers have a chance to critique their photos as a group or one-on-one with Wayde.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Lodging: La Quinta

    Here's lookin' at ya!
    Day 6      Culmination

On this final full day, photo taking continues, of course, but time is alloted for post production work as well. Wayde meets each group member at his or her own skill level and teaches the concepts and technique for working on images for the desired effects.  After a delectable  -- photo-worthy -- final dinner, close the evening with a group photo show.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Lodging: La Quinta

Such tremendous satisfaction in the amassed photos
    Day 7      Adiós

Final photographs, final breakfast, and then on to San Jose for afternoon flights to the USA or connections to other parts of Costa Rica or Central America. Stay in touch with Wayde after your return home. Sharing of images and critiques can be an ongoing mutual pleasure.

    Meals: Breakfast

    Adiós muchachos. Until next time...
