Women's Journey to Semana Santa

An insider view of Holy Week pageantry, indigenous life, and textile traditions

Join Guatemalan guide and textile expert Olga Reiche on this women's trip to Mayan markets and villages, and to witness the magnificent pageantry of Semana Santa. In the charming city of Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Holy Week celebrations are more elaborate than anywhere else in this hemisphere. Leading up to Good Friday, Guatemalans of all ages carpet the streets with intricate designs of flower petals and pine needles. Thousands of purple-robed celebrants carry enormous floats on the carpeted streets from dawn to dusk. The fervor, emotion, color, and religiosity are intense, and in every aspect reflect the blend of indigenous tradition and Roman Catholicism that defines Guatemala. From Antigua, travel to the highlands to stay at a gorgeous hotel on the shores of Lake Atitlan and to visit in different lakeside communities where Olga's ties run deep. This trip offers very select hotel reservations in intimate, artistically-adorned accommodations which are exceedingly difficult to obtain within a year of a Holy Week trip.

Inquire about a two-day pre-tour to the grand Mayan site of Tikal in protected rainforest in northern Guatemala.

“Olga's easy manner and wealth of knowledge were just the beginning of why she's the perfect guide for this trip. She is extraordinarily knowledgeable about textiles and personally connected with women weavers wherever we went. She also proved to be fun, rich in personal history, engaging and flexible. What a find! This trip went beyond my expectations ..." --Eileen T, Guatemala Semana Santa 2011
