This four-day extension to Southern Nicaragua gives you an up close and personal opportunity to enjoy the region’s fabulous views and unique wildlife. A guided motorboat trip up the Rio San Juan takes you past a jungle rich with exotic South American birds to the eco-friendly riverbank Sabalos Lodge. Here you’ll enjoy a variety of outdoor activities from bird watching and rainforest hiking to river rafting, horseback riding and kayaking, as well as a tour of the historic El Castillo Spanish fortress. This extension will give you a more in-depth view of Nicaragua and make your trip extra special.

| Day 1 § Managua/San Carlos | From Managua you’ll board a local flight and reach the Nicaraguan wilderness of San Carlos in just an hour. You’ll then travel by motorboat up the Rio San Juan with a local guide who will help you spot the diverse wildlife along the shore, such as monkeys, various waterbirds, and many more. After about 25 miles you will reach Sabalos Lodge, a comfortable eco-tourism lodge on the riverbank. The rest of the afternoon will be free for you to experience the sights and sounds of the nature lodge. (B,L,D)
| | Day 2 § El Castillo Fortress/Museums | Today you’ll enjoy a visit to El Castillo, a Spanish fortress built in the 16th century to protect Grenada against English pirates. A visit to the accompanying museum and a guided tour of the immediate surroundings will round out your day. (B,L,D)
| | Day 3 § Free day at Sabalos Lodge | You will have a free day today at Sabalos Lodge to take in the surrounding jungle. Relax in a hammock and savor the view, or enjoy several guided activities, including river rafting, horseback riding, hiking, and fishing.(B,L,D)
