Urubamba River Rafting near Cusco Extension

The Urubamba River runs through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, which contains many ancient Inca ruins, marketplaces, and great picnic sites. In the early 1970s the first rafters arrived from overseas to explore and raft on Peruvian white water rivers. They found the rivers extremely beautiful and navigable in many different sections, with the Urubamba River being one of the best waters to begin rafting or experience some adrenaline-pumping rapids.

Trip Itinerary

ANTICIPATED ITINERARY, ACTUAL ROUTE MAY VARY

Day 1  §  Urubamba Rafting
Take a drive south of Cusco for a little over an hour. Along the way, you pass various Incan and pre-Incan sites as well as villages of colonial origin until you reach the gorges of the Vilcanota River, the main tributary of the Urubamba River. After a briefing and assembly of the equipment you will be brought to the river, where you will begin rafting the grade 2-3 rapids through a narrow gorge. Arrive at the take-out point and return to Cusco in the evening. Depending on your level of experience in rafting you may also raft the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley from Ollantaytambo, Huaran, or Chuquicahuana. At the end of the day, there is a chance for an optional visit to nearby archaeological sites. (L)
