The JOURNEYS story began in Nepal 35 long, rich years ago, with a trip very similar to this one. What better place, then, to celebrate this milestone anniversary? Nepal – the place where it all began for us, and the place where, no matter where else we immerse ourselves, and no matter the length of our travel wish lists, our hearts always long to return. You are invited to become a part of our history and the ongoing dream of JOURNEYS on this special 35th anniversary trek. Join Nawang Sherpa, son of founder Pemba Sherpa, and second-generation leader of JOURNEYS Nepal, for a trek deep into the Khumbu region around Everest. This one-time expedition will have audiences with local experts and elders to learn about the evolution of conservation, tourism, religion, education and development in the area over the past 35 years. At the high point of the trek, choose to climb to Everest Base Camp or to Kalapathar (18,800’), a viewpoint across from and above Base Camp from which you can see the entire Everest climbing route. The trip also includes the highlights of Kathmandu: the Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage destination of Boudhanath, Hindu holy site of Pashupatinath, and anachronistic corners of this modernizing city that retain their charming, historic, carved wood facades and are still impassable by automobile. Consider extending for a few days in Dhulikhel, on the edge of the Kathmandu Valley, if you have time. Nepal’s greatest charms are timeless, and you will find them as compelling today as they were on our first trip in 1978: vibrant colors glinting in the bazaar, warm, smiling faces, the ancient stories of Hindu and Buddhist culture, devout monks and sadhus in maroon and gold practicing their daily rites, carved temples and prayer wheels – and the Himalayan mountains towering above it all, stealing your breath each time you turn for another glimpse of the peaks. Nawang and the Sherpas of Nepal look forward to sharing it all with you. The more group members we get, the more staff from JOURNEYS Ann Arbor will join, too! Brief Itinerary
