    Charming Czech Republic

    Active exploration of the countryside and national parks

    Day 1      Vienna / Lednice

    Arrive at the Vienna airport. Your guide will greet you and transfer you to the first site, Lednice Village. On the way to Lednice, stop in Mikulov for lunch and viewing the Mikulov Main Square and castle. Lednice contains a UNESCO World Heritage palace and the largest park in the country (200 km²). The beauty of the surrounding English gardens is perfect for a relaxing jaunt. This area is also an important bird reserve with one of the largest night heron colonies in the country.

    Later, check-in to your hotel before being briefed by your guide in the hotel restaurant at dinner. A wine reception will also follow.

    The picturesque town of Mikulov
    Day 2      Lednice / Valtice

    Wake up with a relaxing seven mile walk around the UNESCO protected area of Lednice-Valtice. Begin at the baroque Rajsna Watchtower and walk down to the gorgeous little town of Valtice, featuring one of the former castles of the Liechtenstein Royal Family. Continue your walk along the vineyards and oak and pine forest. Admire 300-year-old sites designed by the greatest architects of the time, including a chapel dedicated to St. Hubert, patron saint of hunters. Tonight enjoy a a dinner and wine tasting.

    Lednice Castle
    Day 3      Podyji National Park

    After breakfast, drive to South Moravia to visit the "Iron Curtain" in Čížov. The Iron Curtain symbolized the conflict and physical boundary dividing Europe from 1945-1989. Drive further south for more fertile orchards and vineyards and drive along the Dyje River. This national park is specifically known for its biological and geological importance, an area of precious plants and animals among inhabited countryside.  Walk from the village Lukov to the castle ruin, Novy Hradek, for a guided tour. This castle originally belonged to the Czech emperor Charles IV. Afterward, picnic in the village Podmoli and continue though the national park. The walk ends in Havraniky, where you will drive by vehicle to the UNESCO heritage listed town of Telc.

    Try some fresh cheese at the organic sheep and goat farm
    Day 4      Telc

    Telc is one of the most charming, beautiful Renaissance towns in the Czech Republic. Telc is an impressively preserved World Heritage Site. Enjoy a walking excursion to the Renaissance Castle of Telc, owned by the Lords of Hradec. Next, hitch a ride to the village of Svetla, where we begin walking. Along the way, see the Michovska rock, a natural monument reaching 2,404 feet high. Picnic on the bank of the Velky pond, established in the 16th century. Walk back to Telc via the ruins of the castle Stamberk and Lhotka village, entering Telc though an alley of lime trees. Later in the afternoon, we will stop at a family owned organic sheep and goat farm to try some of their fresh products. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.

    Day 5      Trebon Biosphere Reserve

    After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of Telc Castle. Then drive via private coach through the Trebon area which contains some of the largest lakes and ponds in the region. This natural beauty is acknowledged by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. Enjoy the area with a relaxing walk and admire the five hundred year old giant oak trees. Visit several old farm villages built in the "peasant baroque" style. In the afternoon, stop for a nature break in the town of Trebon before transfering to Cesky Krumlov.

    Day 6      Cesky Krumlov / Vyssi Brod Monastery

    Cesky Krumlov is a small medieval town,  barely changed since the 18th century. Visit the Gothic border castle, which was rebuilt into a huge renaissance chateau in the 16th century by Italian architects. It is the second largest castle complex in the Czech Republic. The castle sits high above the town and is surrounded by formal terraced gardens.  The castle's unique gem is its Baroque theatre, the oldest and most completely preserved building in the world.

    In the afternoon, you have the option of driving approximately thirty minutes along the meandering Vltava River to reach the incredible Cistercian Monastery in Vyssi Brod. The monastery was founded around 1259. Here you can inspect the huge library, venerable cloister walk or the majestic church itself.

    Later, embark on a walk of the Stations of the Cross set amongst the stunning beauty of Sumava National Park. Upon completion of your walk, drive back to Cesky Krumlov.

    The Cistercian Monastery in Vyssi Brod
    Day 7      Holasovice / Prague

    Today you will set off for Prague. Along the way, stop in Holasovice village, which dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The village was deserted after the second world war, which is why most of its buildings remain intact. The village was restored and repopulated in 1990 and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.

    In the afternoon, take a three hour city tour though the many renaissance, baroque, art nouveau, and neo-gothic monuments. This excursion includes 9th century Prague Castle (entrance included) and the center of the Czech statehood for almost 11 centuries. After reaching St. Nicholas church, cross the Charles Bridge and end at the Old Town Square.


    Finish the day with a lovely dinner cruise on the Vltava River.

    After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home.
