Komodo Island Dragon Encounter Extension

Lying 200 nautical miles east of Bali, Komodo National Park is nestled between the large islands of Sumbawa and Flores. This unique biosphere was born in the great volcanic uplift that formed Sumatra, Java, Bali, and the islands eastward toward Papua New Guinea. Most of the Komodo National Park is dry, rugged, and hilly, due to a combination of ancient volcanic eruptions and more recent tectonic uplift of sedimentary sea beds. The irregular coastline is indented with rocky headlands and sandy bays, many of which are framed by soaring volcanic cliffs. For most of the year, Komodo is dry and hot, parched by arid winds from the Australian desert that blow from April through October. Maximum temperatures can reach 110ºF, with minimum temperatures of approximately 60ºF.
Komodo National Park encompasses most of the recognized habitat of the largest known lizard in the world, the famous Komodo Dragon. The Park is also home to Sunda deer, wild buffalos, wild boars, macaques, and wild horses. Although all the large mammals have been introduced by man, indigenous frogs, snakes, and lizards also live on the island. Over 150 species of birds have been identified in Komodo National Park, many of which are migratory and more representative of Australasian than Asiatic species.

Upon arrival at Komodo Island, you will make arrangements for National Park permits. Then, you will be escorted by a park ranger on a trek to search for the giant Komodo Dragon in the wild. Be sure to keep a safe distance from these creatures, and listen carefully to your guide. The Komodo Dragon is an ancient species whose ancestors date back over 100 million years. The lizards can be quite fierce, and they range in size from less than 1 ounce to over 285 pounds! The total number of Komodos inhabiting Komodo National Park is estimated to be 3,000. After a few hours searching for Komodo Dragons, return to the boat to continue your trip to Pink Beach. Pink Beach is famous for its beautiful marine garden and its abundance of tropical fish. You will have ample time here to enjoy its peaceful beach or to go swimming or snorkeling. (Snorkeling gear is provided.) Lunch will be served on the boat today. In the afternoon, sail back to Labuhan Bajo. If time permits, stop at Mesa Island to observe the life of the villagers, who live on this tiny island.
