Trip Itinerary


Day 1  §  Jayapura/Wamena

Arrive in Jayapura early this morning, where you will be met by your guide and connected to a 40 minute flight to Wamena. Upon arrival in Wamena, you are transferred directly to your hotel. Begin your tour of the area this afternoon with visits to a local, traditional market, the Sinatma hanging bridge, and Suroba, a traditional village of the Dani tribe. In this village you will have the chance to see the cultural arts and crafts of the Dani tribe. Many Dani men still dress only in a penis gourd, while others have adopted western clothing. Later in the afternoon you will be driven back to the hotel. Stay overnight at the Baliem Pilamo Hotel (or similar). (L,D)

Day 2  §  Wamena/Baliem Valley

Enjoy a full day exploring the Baliem Valley area. Today you will visit southern Kurima and travel to Sogokmo by a short car ride. Take a simple day trek of about 4-5 hours through Dani farmland and sweet potato gardens. This trek offers wonderful views of the Baliem Gorge and the beautiful landscapes which surround the gorge. Enjoy interacting with the Dani people and chatting with them (with assistance from your tour guide) in order to get a better understanding of their way of life. In the afternoon, you will return to your hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 3  §  Jiwika

Today, explore the northern part of Baliem Valley. Take a short drive to the Jiwika district, about 30 minutes away from Wamena. Then, climb up the Milli Mountain to see how the Dani women use traditional techniques to extract salt. Afterwards, walk down to the village of Sumpaima to see the 250-year-old mummy of a local village chief. Arrive at the village of Anemoigi after a short drive. Here, you will experience the Dani great pig feast and dance. Late this afternoon, you will be transferred back to your hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 4  §  Wamena/Jayapura

This morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Jayapura. Upon arrival in Jayapura, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is spent touring Jayapura. Visit the MacArthur War Memorial and enjoy a boat ride on Sentani Lake, where you will see the local tribes living on the lake’s shore. You may also visit the Anthropology Museum and the art market, where you have the chance to hunt for tribal art souvenirs. Stay overnight at the Sentani Indah Hotel (or similar). (B,L,D)

Day 5  §  Jayapura/Onward

Today, you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight. (B)
