    People, arts and nature of Bali, Java, and Sulawesi

    Day 1      Arrive Yogyakarta / Borobudur Temple

    Upon arrival in Yogyakarta in Central Java you will be met and transferred to Manohara Hotel, located adjacent to the world famous Borobodur 8th century Buddhist temple site. At sunset you’ll enjoy a guided visit to Borobudur temple, which holds over 500 Buddha statues and has over 2,600 relief panels. Dinner will be provided at your hotel.

    Day 2      Borobodur / Yogyakarta City

    Today after breakfast you'll leave for the colorful, vibrant city of Yogyakarta, visiting Mendut and Pawon temples en route. Mendut Temple was built in 824 A.D. by King Indera of the Sailendra Dynasty. It is frequently used to celebrate the Waisak Festival every May, which recalls the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha. The Pawon temple is located between Borobudur and Mendut, and has many reliefs of boddhisattvas and taras, as well as reliefs of kalpataru (the tree of life).  Once you arrive in Yogyakarta you will visit Kraton (Sultan's Palace), the local batik and silver-work home industries, and the Sonobudoyo Museum, home to over 1,000 keris. These asymmetrical daggers are regarded as both weapons and spiritual objects; some blades are good luck while others are bad luck.  After lunch at a local restaurant, continue visiting local batik and silverwork home industries.

    Day 3      Yogyakarta City / Prambanan, Solo & Sangiran Tour

    A morning tour takes you to Prambanan, Java’s most elegant Hindu Temple complex. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the largest temples in Southeast Asia, and its tall, pointed architecture. Next you’ll drive on to Solo, Yogyakarta’s sister city, which is also known as the center of Batik. Your stops in Solo include the Royal Mangkunegaran, famous for their priceless antiques, and a flea market filled with local antiques. Afterwards, travel north of Solo to an archaeological site and museum where you'll meet a distant relative – the prehistoric "Java Man" (Pithecanthropus erectus). Discovered in 1891, these fossils comprise one of the first known specimens of Homo erectus.  Return to Yogyakarta in the late afternoon for your overnight.

    Day 4      Sulawesi: Ujung Pandang/Torajaland

    After an early breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport for your flight to Sulawesi. Your guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to a hotel for the night.

    Day 5      Torajaland

    After breakfast, your guide will transfer you to Torajaland by car or minibus. The 8-9 hour ride has many scenic stops, with opportunities to see the area's unique architecture. The houses have beautiful boat-shaped roofs that are assembled from thousands of bamboo timbers. Stay overnight at Missilana Hotel or similar.

    Day 6      Torajaland

    You will have a full day meeting people and exploring the culture of Torajaland. Visit Londa (the cave graves) Ketekesu-Siguntu-Pallawa (a typical Torajenese village), Sa'dan (a weaving village) and Rantepao, the business center of Toraja. The most spectacular ceremonies in Torajaland are funerals, often involving thousands of people and hundreds of animal sacrifices over a period of four days. Your itinerary in Torajaland may be modified if your guide is able to locate a funeral occurring during your visit.

    Day 7      Rantepao / Makale-Barruppu

    After breakfast, depart for Barruppu at the northern tip of Torajaland, passing through Batutumonga and Lokamata along the way. This is your chance to enjoy the authentic beauty of Toraja hinterland, remote villages and magnificent landscapes. You will have many hiking opportunities during this time. Overnight at a local villager's house.

    Day 8      Barruppu / Rantepao

    After breakfast, take a short trek to visit nearby hanging graves, then return to Rantepao or Makale via Lolai Hill. You may wish to purchase supplies for a picnic en route. Overnight at Missiliana Hotel in Rantepao.

    Day 9      Torajaland / Ujungpandang

    Depart for Torajaland for Ujunpandang, stopping at Bantimurung along the way to see the impressive waterfall and butterfly breeding center. Arrive in Ujungpandang by later afternoon, check in at Pantai Gapura, and enjoy the pristine beachside location.

    Day 10      Ujungpandang / Denpasar / Candidasa

    Transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Denpasar, Bali. Arrive in Bali and transfer to Candidasa Beach located on the eastern coast of the island (1.5 hours drive from the airport). Along the way, stop at Kerta Gosa, the former law court of Klungkung Kingdom which is known for its ceiling painting and Goa Lawah Temple situated at the mouth of a dark tunnel inhabited by hundreds of hanging bats. Stay overnight at Candi Beach Cottage, which boasts a beautiful beachside location with lush, tropical gardens. Enjoy your afternoon visiting Karangasem Royal Palace and Tirta Gangga water garden, the former bathing place and recreational site of the Royal family. Drive back to the hotel for overnight.

    Day 11      Candidasa / Lovina

    Leave Candidasa and head for the famed north Bali beach resort of Lovina after breakfast. You'll visit some fascinating places on the way, including Tenganan Village, famous for its rare double-ikat weaving or “gringsing;” Putung Hill, where you can enjoy beautiful views of east Bali; and the biggest temple complex in Bali, Besakih Temple (“Mother Temple”). Today's final stop is the Kintamani Mountain Resort, where the views of Batur Caldera are truly breathtaking. In the late afternoon you'll arrive at Lovina and stay overnight at a local hotel. If you wish, you can book a dolphin tour for the next morning with the hotel at an additional cost.

    Mother Temple
    Day 12      Lovina / Ubud

    Travel to the artisan village of Ubud today, visiting temples and other places of interest en route. You'll see the 200-foot high Git-Git waterfall; Ulun Danu temple, which is dedicated to the god of fertility; Candi Kuning, a traditional market that sells fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Upon arrival in Ubud you’ll check in at your hotel and have a free afternoon to explore the city. Cultural shows are performed nightly in Ubud; be sure to check the schedule at your hotel’s front desk. The best open-air stage is the Ubud Water Palace, where the setting is magnificent even by Balinese standards. A large lotus pond framed with ancient flowering frangipani trees stands against a backdrop featuring Pura Taman Kemuda Saraswati, one of Ubud’s main temple complexes.

    Ulun Danu Temple
    Day 13      Ubud

    Today after breakfast visit Batubulan Village to see the mythical Barong and Kris dances; Celuk village renowned for gold and silver works, and then Mas; artist colony for woodcarving. Lunch will be in central Ubud – on your own. After lunch head for Penataran Sasih Temple where bronze age drums and stone carvings from the 11th century are preserved and then to Tampaksiring Waterspring Temple, built in 964 A.D. by a Balinese king of the Warmadewa Dynasty. Drive back to hotel with another visit to Petulu for the sunset return of white herons to their nesting places in this village.

    Enjoy a free day to leisurely explore Ubud on your own.

    Day 15      Ubud / Sanur

    After breakfast, transfer to Sanur for some sight-seeing, and stop to see the impressive Taman Ayun Temple en route. The temple was built in the 17th century and is surrounded by a lovely moat. Walk through the Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest where you will come across hundreds of tame monkeys. During your walk, you will run into the iconic Tanah Lot Sea temple, one of the most marvelous temples in Bali. It is perched on an enormous rock and is completely surrounded by the Indian Ocean during high tide. Tanah Lot is also said to be one of the best places to enjoy the sunset. Afterwards, drive to Sanur.

    Day 16      Sanur

    Enjoy another free day to spend at your leisure in Sanur. The beach is always a good choice.
