If you’re thinking about the Mt. Hagen Show tour, be sure to consider the Goroka Show, one of the best and most exciting of the highland shows. Similar to the famous Mt. Hagen Show, you will witness lively, exotic performances by sing-sing groups from all over Papua New Guinea.

This program takes you on a journey through the highlands and Sepik cultures of Papua New Guinea. Starting with the beautiful Waghi Valley, and staying at the lovely Rondon Ridge, you will tour Mt. Hagen and the surrounding areas. Your journey then continues to the Sepik River and its tributaries. Travel next to the Tari Valley -- home of the flamboyant Huli people. Here, 13 species of birds of paradise, human hair wigs, and spectacular views await the intrepid traveler seeking the ultimate journey. Next, you will experience the cultural extravaganza of the Goroka Show. During your time at the show, you will stay at the gorgeous Bird of Paradise Hotel, located in Goroka.

The Classic Goroka Show Tour is locally escorted; local guides are used throughout the itinerary.

  • Days 10-11: Goroka Show
    Observe tradtional celebrations

Spend these two days enjoying the cultural extravaganza that is the Goroka Show. The shows were first held in the 1950s as a means of gathering different tribes and clans together. At times, there might be more than 40,000 painted warriors dancing to the beat of the Kundu drums. Among the performers are the legendary mud men of Asaro. Tribal folklore says that centuries ago the warriors of Asaro were defeated in a tribal fight "payback" raid, and, to make themselves look fierce in the process, covered their bodies with grey mud. According to legend, the ruse worked. Their enemies fled at the sight of these ghostly apparitions. The mud men recreate the drama at the Goroka Show.

Need to Know

While traveling in Papua New Guinea, please keep in mind that although PNG is situated relatively close to other well developed South Pacific and Asian nations, such as Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti, Indonesia, and Singapore, PNG is somewhat isolated, and, as a result, most services and facilities, including transportation and tourism, are relatively underdeveloped by comparison. Unlike these countries, you are visiting a country with a tourist trade in its infancy, and thus you may have to deal with different situations along the way. PNG also has a culture that is completely different from others. Although these factors make for a unique experience, it may at times create circumstances that may become frustrating if the visitor does not remain patient and keep an open mind. If you come to Papua New Guinea with a spirit of adventure and a positive, flexible attitude, you will surely have only good memories to take home with you.
