Who owns JOURNEYS?

Joan and Will Weber of Ann Arbor founded JOURNEYS while they were graduate students at the University of Michigan in 1978. Both Will and Joan remain active in JOURNEYS management on a day-to-day basis. Will was a Nepal Peace Corps Volunteer and a High School math and science teacher as well as a conservation officer in the Nepal National Parks. He participated in the original survey and development work which led to Mt. Everest, Langtang and Chitwan National Parks. Joan was an English language and cross-cultural education teacher in Kathmandu. The Webers are sole owners of JOURNEYS and are also directors of the non-profit Earth Preservation Fund, a 501.c.3 charitable, tax-exempt, organization supporting conservation and community development projects in JOURNEYS destinations.

How flexible are JOURNEYS itineraries?

On group trips you will share the same hotel, transportation and guides as other participants. Hiking pace is flexible. Our itineraries are actively planned and don't include "free days" though we always encourage you to extend your trip before or after group dates. Privately planned trips are usually flexible,though all accommodations are paid for and reserved in advance.

How can I stayin touch with JOURNEYS?

I want JOURNEYS to put together a custom trip for me. How does this work?

First, check out our catalog or website to see if we already have a trip that might be similar to what you are looking for (if not, don't worry, we often arrange very unique trips and are always up for a challenge). Then, email or call one of our knowledgeable staff members to discuss your travel interests and destinations. We will put together an itinerary which we think will suit you - we take into account the places, activities, time of year and all other possible factors to plan the best possible experience. The more information you can give us, the better able we will be to provide an itinerary that willbe just right.

We are prepared to work with you to finalize the perfect itinerary. In most cases, actually confirming land reservations overseas requires advancing a deposit to the operators. Pricing specific hotel or itinerary requests requires costly and time consuming communications to overseas offices. For more precise specification and pricing of air tickets, hotels, land services or other custom arrangements, we must charge, in advance, a trip planning fee of approximately $250, depending on the complexity of the trip. This is fully applicable to the trip resulting from the planning effort, but non-refundable in the event you do not travel. Payment of the planning fee will enable us to provide more detailed airline information, a guaranteed land cost of services and a description of each day's activities and more annotations and comments on the itinerary. To confirm the itinerary, our standard sign up procedureswill apply.

How do I sign up?

We need a signed reservation form and a $500 per person/per trip deposit to reserve your space. In some cases, the deposit required may be more. You can sign up on our website with the online form at http://www.journeys-intl.com/sign_up/ or you can download the reservation form PDF file and fill it out and fax or mail it to us. We can fax, mail or e-mail a reservation form to you. Let usknow which you prefer.

What method of payment can I use?

We take checks, Visa, and Mastercard. In some caseswe will take Amex for air fares only.

What happens if I need to cancel?

Please read our Terms and Conditions at http://www.journeys-intl.com/terms_and_conditions.php for full information about our cancellation policy. Depending on how far away your departure date is, we charge a cancellation fee from $300 up to full trip cost. We ask that you let us know as soon as possible if you decide to cancel your trip. We will need a statement in writing, but you should call us as soon as you can. Your statement can be faxed, mailed, or e-mailed.

Does JOURNEYS require or recommend travel insurance?

We do not require travel insurance for all trips, but we do highly recommend it. Travel insurance can protect you if you must cancel, if your bags are lost, if you need medical attention while traveling or need to be evacuated, or if you miss out on part of your trip or incur additional costs because of flight delays. Are trips accompanied by a JOURNEYS staff member or a guide from the US?

Most JOURNEYS trips are led by a local guide who meets you upon arrival in your destination. Some trips, including our JOURNEYS Signature Trips (JSTs) are accompanied by a staff member and a special local guide once in your destination. Our highly trained local experts are the key to your indepth experience.

How far in advance should I reserve my trip?

Book as soon as you know when and where you want to travel. Airfares tend to be less expensive the farther in advance you purchase them. December holiday departures may need to be booked up to one year in advance.

Can JOURNEYS book my airfare?

In most cases, yes. If you wish to use frequent flyer miles for your trip, call the airline directly. Call to us to discuss the best ticketing strategy for your situation.

Should I book through my travel agent or directly through JOURNEYS?

Book with us directly if you would like to contact us on a continuing basis prior to your trip. If you have a travel agent you trust to take care of all of your details, we can work with him or her on your behalf.

Does JOURNEYS offer discounts?

We offer a five percent discount on trip land costs for repeat travelers.

How do I know JOURNEYS is reliable?

We have been in business since 1978 under the same family ownership. Unlike most travel companies, JOURNEYS has no financial debt or outstanding institutional loans. We are always willing to offer client references of people who havetaken our trips recently. In most cases, our local operators have been our partners in quality travel for many years. You will find our full time staff alwaysavailable by toll-free phone during office hours. After you sign up you will receivea very detailed pre-departure package of information about your trip and thenecessary preparation for your destination. Our travelers consistently praise the thoroughness of our materials and our availability to answer questions prior to departure. If you still have questions, call and ask to speak, personally, with the owners about your concerns.

How will you keep me safe and healthy?

We offer extensive advice prior to departure regarding the conditions of your destinations. Throughout your trip you will have a local guide and a localoffice to coordinate your arrangements. We constantly evaluate our itineraries,accommodations and services for security, safety and healthfulness. We practice rigid sanitation procedures during camping and hiking trips. We offer extensive tips and links to specific, timely and relevant information about current conditions in your destination.
