Khama Rhino Sanctuary was established in 1980s, in 300 hectares (740 acres) of Kalahari sandveld with Serwe Pan, primarily to protect the rhinos which at that time was listed subject to poaching causing fears of extinction. A community trust was established t protect the black and white rhino species left in the area. There are also other indigenous wild life species including birds in the park.
