Ayers Rock

Ayers Rock, also known as Uluru, is an enormous sandstone rock formation, rising 1,100 feet in height. It is located in the Northern Territory of central Australia, sometimes referred to as Australia's "Red Center." Ayers Rock is sacred to a number of aboriginal tribes who inhabit the area. The rock formation itself houses many caves and ancient paintings and is surrounded by a flat desert dotted with natural springs and waterholes. Ayers Rock is notable for appearing to change color as the different light strikes it at different times of the day and year, with the sunset being a particularly remarkable sight. The rock is made of sandstone infused with minerals, such as feldspar, which reflect the red light of the sunrise and the sunset, making the rock appear to glow. The rock gets its rust color from oxidation. Rainfall is uncommon in the area around Ayers Rock, but during wet periods, the rock acquires a silvery-grey color, with streaks of black algae on the areas serving as channels for water flow. Ayers Rock is listed as a World Heritage Site for its natural and man-made attributes. It is one of the most well-known tourist sites in Australia.
