Punta Tombo

Punta Tombo is a peninsula that juts into the Atlantic Ocean about 110 kilometers south of Trelew in the Chubut Province of Argentina. The 3-kilometer-long, 600-meter-wide peninsula is covered with sand, clay, and gravel.

Punta Tombo is most notable for its important colony of Magellanic penguins. Between September and April, up to one million penguins come to this site to incubate their eggs and prepare their offspring for migration. This is the largest such colony in South America.

Other wildlife encountered in the area includes sea birds (mainly seagulls, chimangos, and cormorants), rheas, and guanacos.
